Questions Families Have Before Registration
Camp Structure
Each week has its own story arc where our demigod campers complete a series of training (sword fighting, Monsters 101, trivia, Olympic Games) in preparation to face the challenges brought on by the story of the week.
Each session, we explore a different myth, so no two weeks are the same. Campers can spend their days making armor and weapons in the forge, going on scavenger hunts, playing Mythomagic (our tabletop role-playing game), and meeting characters like the Oracle. Then, of course, each week also features a Quest day.
Yes! We spend our days outside.
Some of our camp locations use bathrooms provided by park staff. We equip other locations with private portable restrooms that are cleaned weekly and sanitized/inspected daily. Separate portable hand-washing and sanitizing stations will also be available for specific program locations.
We take regular visits to the bathrooms, but if an individual or small group needs to make a trip outside of the regular visits, they will always be accompanied by a staff member.
Weather
It’s hot out here, so we drink more water than Poseidon, and he’s the god of the ocean! Pack a reusable water bottle for your demigod and we’ll provide fresh water throughout the day. We take frequent water breaks and make sure to carry extra water with us when we go questing.
The sun is at its strongest during training hours. Pack sunscreen for your demigod to reapply whenever the group takes a break. We also recommend packing a hat. On exceptionally hot days, we will seek shelter, shade, and additional water, and we may transition indoors if needed.
Demigods should be prepared with ponchos or umbrellas for light rain/drizzle days.
If we experience unexpected rain showers during the camp day, demigods will transition to a designated indoor area. If we know beforehand that we will be indoors, families will be notified of the drop-off location change. All safety guidelines and social distancing measures will be followed and programming will be adjusted accordingly.
If COVID restrictions keep us from our indoor spaces, families will be notified to pick up their demigods early for a transition to virtual programming.
Campers
For our younger demigods, our counselor-to-camper ratio is one counselor to a maximum of eight campers. For our older demigods, our counselor-to-camper ratio is one counselor to a maximum of twelve campers. In addition, our counselors are led by a team of directors and supporting staff.
There is a section during registration where families can select their camper’s cabin/hometown preferences and enter the names of friends and/or family members they would like to be grouped with. All of our groups have mixed age ranges.
With the exception of Camp Jupiter (demigods from 6th-9th grades), all of our groups participate in the same activities. Programming does not change from camp to camp, only the group names do.
Cabins: This is what we call our groups at Camp Half-Blood Brooklyn and Daring Girls Brooklyn. They are based on the cabins in the Percy Jackson series and have a maximum of ten campers per cabin. You can view our Camp Half-Blood cabin descriptions here. Daring Girls cabin descriptions coming soon!
Hometowns: This is what we call our groups at all locations except for Camp Half-Blood Brooklyn and Daring Girls Brooklyn. They are named after ancient Greek and Roman cities and have a maximum of ten campers per hometown. You can view our Hometown descriptions here.
Absolutely, as long as space permits. Please coordinate cabin/hometown preferences with your friend(s) before submitting your registration form. If you have questions about placement or need to request a preference change, please email info@plato-learning.com.
We encourage all demigods to have a few back-up preferences since we cannot guarantee availability in a group for any given week. Each group participates in all the same activities, so your camper won’t miss out on anything by being in a different group. We do not keep group-specific waitlists.
Medical & Financial
Every family registered for a program in New York and New Jersey must submit a medical form per camper by May 15th. You can download the form and submit it online or email it to info@plato-learning.com.
Health information such as allergies and relevant medications is collected at registration for all programs.
Our staff members are trained in First Aid and CPR. We do not have a nurse on staff, and our staff members are not allowed to dispense medicine to campers.
If your demigod needs consistent medical assistance during the camp day, we have had family members or caregivers attend with the camper and be stationed nearby for these purposes.
Yes! Please inform us if your demigod has any allergies we should be aware of. You can let us know in your online registration form or email us directly at info@plato-learning.com. All of our camp-issued snacks are peanut-free but some may contain tree nuts, which are always marked clearly on the label. We also offer a staff-supervised nut-free zone for demigods to eat without having to worry about cross-contamination, where we encourage other campers with nut-free food to join their friends.
In our efforts to keep everyone safe, our COVID-19 policies are reevaluated and updated constantly. For our most updated information, click here.
Yes, we do. Due to the volume of requests we receive each year, we aren’t able to accommodate every request, but we do offer a limited number of full and partial scholarships to our camp programs. You can submit your application here. We will review applications on a rolling basis.
Questions Families Have After Registration
Registration
You can access your registration information when you log into your CampSite account. If you forget your password, you can just click “Forgot my Password” and create a new one or email info@plato-learning.com for help.
We can certainly try. Please email us at info@plato-learning.com with your transfer request. Be sure to include your camper’s name, the week you’d like to transfer out of, and the week you’d like to transfer into. We cannot guarantee week and cabin/hometown availability.
We try to accommodate our families as much as possible since we know that sometimes plans have to change.
There will be no refunds for the summer of 2024 after March 1st.
In the event that you cannot attend, credit or program transfer will be offered at our discretion. In the event that we are not able to operate our programming due to unforeseen circumstances, we will offer camp credits for future use.
You can change your camp dates any time as long as space allows by emailing info@plato-learning.com.
You can register for additional weeks during the summer as long as availability allows.
We know that life doesn’t slow down in the summer, so we completely understand if your demigod has to skip a day. It certainly won’t make for a less exciting adventure.
Each morning is a new experience, so during our morning announcements, we make sure to recap the previous day’s events and give other demigods the opportunity to retell the stories from the day before in case anyone wasn’t there to experience it for themselves.
We are not able to prorate the cost of a session if you need to miss a day.
Items to bring
All camper groups have a designated area that is observed throughout the day and all of their items are kept together.
The sun is at its strongest during training hours. Pack sunscreen for your demigod to reapply whenever the group takes a break. We also recommend packing a hat. On exceptionally hot days, we will seek shelter, shade, and additional water, and we may transition indoors if needed.
Yes! We do not provide any meals during camp. In days of yore, we relied on the hunting skills of Artemis, but today, our modern demigods need to bring their own lunch, preferably in an insulated container with an ice pack.
We do provide a cornucopia of prepackaged snacks to stave off the hunger monster.
Yes! We wear our camp shirts every day. If you would like to purchase an additional T-shirt, you can do that through your CampSite profile or by emailing us at gear@plato-learning.com.
Families registered for sessions that start on or before July 11th can purchase additional T-shirts through CampSite until May 30th.
Families registered for sessions that start on or after July 18th can purchase additional T-shirts through CampSite until July 1st.
Any additional T-shirt requests after these dates need to be sent to gear@plato-learning.com by August 1st.
Our swords are well-made and durable, so we only provide one sword per camp season. All of our activities are designed to only require one sword. If you would like to purchase an additional sword as a back-up, you can do that through your CampSite profile or by emailing us at gear@plato-learning.com.
Families registered for sessions that start on or before July 11th can purchase additional swords through CampSite until May 30th.
Families registered for sessions that start on or after July 18th can purchase additional swords through CampSite until July 1st.
Any additional sword requests after these dates need to be sent to gear@plato-learning.com by August 1st.
Your demigod’s T-shirt(s) and sword(s) will be mailed to you prior to your program start date. If your demigod is enrolled in more than one session, you will be mailed a shirt for each session, up to 4 shirts maximum.
During the summer season, families who register by the Tuesday prior to their session will receive their gear in the mail. Families who register after that Tuesday will be able to pick up their gear on their first day of camp.
Drop-off & Location
Families must check their campers in and out of camp each day. Any additional people authorized to pick up your camper need to be added to your Emergency Information Form on CampSite or emailed to info@plato-learning.com
Drop-off is 8:45-9:00 am. Early drop-off is not available for purchase but you can contact your camp director closer to the summer to see if it would be possible to arrange an earlier time at your location.
We’ve found in recent years that we have not had enough demand for aftercare, even in our biggest locations, to make it viable, so we will unfortunately not offer aftercare for Summer 2023.
If you are more than 15 minutes late to pick up your camper(s), a staff member will be designated to stay with them and your payment method on file will be charged a late fee of $25.
