Camp Mythik

Where Monsters Lurk, Heroes Rise

For years, demigods and mortal families have asked when there could be a sleepaway version of our camps, a place where demigods from all of our programs could fully immerse themselves in the mythological adventures of Quest, not for one day, but for a whole week.

THE GODS HAVE ANSWERED OUR PRAYERS

Somewhere to the north of New York City there’s a hidden camp. A place of wonder and magic designed to be a home for demigods from all over. A place where heroes can take their adventure to the next level and protect the magic power at the heart of our new haven.

Camp Mythik is a sleepaway program for demigods that will operate for 3 weeks this summer. Registration is open to rising 6th-9th grade demigods from any Plato Learning program. Our home is The Taconic Outdoor Education Center, a sanctuary for demigods, hidden from the mortal world and nestled in the beautiful wooded environment of the Hudson River Valley. The grounds of this woodland retreat center offer a main hall for dining and gathering, ample fields for demigod sports and battle training, bunking cabins, a lake with kayaks and canoes, ropes courses, an archery range, and many trails where monsters can lurk. And yes, we will be questing after dark… so don’t forget a flashlight.

Staff Spotlight

Jordana Elias, National Program Director

Jordana, a daughter of Aphrodite, learned the transformative power of overnight camp as a bookish kid yearning for adventure. Through the routine and camaraderie of sleepaway camp, she discovered her strength as a leader and community creator. Working in a range of roles at sleepaway camp, Jordana made camp life…her life! Studying History and Classics at Skidmore College and obtaining a Master’s Degree in Education, she continued to be inspired by tales of heroes and villains when she began teaching Language Arts in East Harlem. There, she used the Percy Jackson series to enhance curriculum and immersive learning. In the summer of 2021, she worked as the Camp Director for Camp Half-Blood Central Park, raising the next generation of demigods through her love of storytelling, divine misadventures, and sword-fighting.

Now, as Plato’s National Program Director, Jordana is all about establishing a place for demigods to take that next step in building their most heroic selves. Her experience taught her that the best way to find independence and life-long confidence is to dive into adventure, head and heart first. By escaping the confines of familiar roles and routine places at Camp Mythik, demigods can embrace new experiences, forge new friendships, and unleash their own confidence.

Timothy Russell Ling, Director of Branding & Marketing and Camp Mythik Director

Born and raised in Brooklyn’s Park Slope, Tim, creation of Mars & Athena,  started attending summer camps (both day and overnight) at a young age and discovered the magic of nature outside of Prospect Park. The friends he made over those summers further solidified his appreciation for the power of camp. He joined Brooklyn’s Camp Half-Blood in the program’s second year, 2012, and has worked just about every role at camp, from camp counselor all the way to the Director of Marketing. Along the way, he created and directed our first middle-school summer camp program, Camp Jupiter, in 2017.

Who better to be the very first Camp Director at Camp Mythik? Tim is most interested in building new traditions, immersing another generation of city kids in the beauty of nature, and giving demigods the right amount of autonomy. He is amazed by the amount of growth young heroes can experience in just a few weeks with mentors who are committed to teaching them important lessons like asking questions, defending their friends, and building trebuchets big enough to launch watermelons into any monsters that try to invade.

Scariest Monsters of All Time

Here’s a look at some of the spooky spirits, malicious monsters, and frightful fiends that have previously challenged demigods on Quests!

Plague Spirits

The Nosoi of Greece, the Wen Shen of China, the Slavic Likhoradka, the Babylonian Pazuzu – disease-spreading demons appear in many mythologies, and some of these plague spirits turned their chaotic energy on Camp Half-Blood during our virtual summer in 2020. They band together into a hive mind, transforming those they touch. Most terrifying of all is the knowledge that they can never be destroyed, only locked away where they can do no harm.
